Social media was used to invite participation in both the contest and promotions.
National Bison Day is an annual commemoration of the ecological, cultural, historical and economic contribution of the American Bison to the United States. It has been held each year since 2012 on the first Saturday in November. Bison supporters, including Native Americans, bison producers, conservationists, sportsmen, and educators typically plan local events and social media engagements celebrating and promoting the bison.
President Obama signed the National Bison Legacy Act on May 9, 2016, making the North American bison the official National Mammal of the United States. The signing of that legislation was a milestone for an animal that once faced extinction. The bison has played central role in America’s history, helped to shape the ecology of the Great Plains, contributes to the U.S. economy, and holds cultural and spiritual significance for Native Americans. Today, bison live in all 50 states and serves as a symbol of unity, resilience and healthy lifestyles and communities. The animal has also become a legendary fixture on Catalina Island.
Using the hashtag #CatalinaBison, visitors and residents were encourage to post their favorite Bison images on Instagram throughout the month of October. The contest ended on November 5th, National Bison Day. Of the 194 entries, Six entries were selected by the Conservancy and Chamber/Bureau staff based on a match to select categories.
