Maggie’s Blue Rose, Encanto Cafe, and Avalon Grille Win the 12th Annual Taste Around of Avalon

AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND, June 6, 2016 – The Catalina Island Chamber of Commerce & Visitor’s Bureau, sponsor of the twelfth annual Taste Around of Avalon, is pleased to announce the winners of this year’s “Best Tastes.” This year’s winner of the “Best Taste of Food” is Maggie’s Blue Rose and the “Best Taste of Drink – with alcohol” winner is Avalon Grille. The “Best Taste of Drink – without alcohol” is Encanto Cafe and the “Best Taste of Dessert” winner is the Avalon Grille.
Fourteen participating establishments offered 28 “tastes” in the annual event, held this year on Thursday, June 2nd. Each first place winner receives $100 and the top three winners are honored in the annual Catalina Island Visitors Guide, as well as on the Chamber’s website, www.catalinachamber.com. Over 500 participants enjoyed the beautiful evening tasting the scrumptious food, dessert and drink offerings and then voting for their favorites.
In an incredibly close race, Maggie’s Blue Rose won in the “Best Taste of Food” category, serving their Mom’s Avocado Enchiladas. Avalon Grille & El Galleon tied for 2nd place, serving up a Crispy Octopus Tostada and Luau Pork BBQ Ribs, respectively.
In the“Best Taste of Drink – with alcohol” category, Avalon Grill garnered top honors with their Sparkling Watermelon & Basil Lemonade. 2nd place went to Maggie’s Blue Rose for their colorful and delicious Quinceañera cocktail, and 3rd was awarded to Bluewater Avalon for the Strawberry Smash.
For the 2nd year in a row, Encanto Café at the Island Spa Catalina won “Best Taste of Drink – without alcohol” for their refreshing lavender-infused lemonade. Finishing in 2nd place was Ben’s Bakery, for their fresh-pressed green juice, and 3rd place went to Coyote Joe’s, for their non-alcoholic rendition of the Wile E Coyote.
Avalon Grille won first place for the “Best Taste of Dessert” with their appealing Bananas Foster Cheesecake, while Scoops’ brioche stuffed with house-made ice cream earned 2nd place honors. 3rd prize went to Lloyd’s of Avalon, for their Caramel Apple Special.
