Catalina Island Marathon Joins Sustainability Movement

Spectrum Sports Management has applied for certification from Council for Responsible Sport for their Catalina Island Marathon. Responsible Sport certified events are some of the world’s leading examples of responsible sport in action, supporting sustainability and environmental consciousness. This creates a perfect partnership with the Catalina Island Marathon, which is largely known for its sustainable practices and support of island charities including a partnership with the Catalina Island Conservancy.

Coming up on its 43rd Anniversary, the Catalina Island Marathon features the exciting and historic marathon course used largely since the first year on the Catalina Island Conservancy’s lands. This includes much of the rugged terrain, spectacular vistas, challenging climbs and special challenges enjoyed by thousands of runners over the years.

“It’s really exciting to see an event like the Catalina Island Marathon step up and pursue a robust sustainability program,” said Council for Responsible Sport Managing Director, Shelley Villalobos“There is a long history of being environmentally-conscious because of the location of the event, but the decision to certify is a signal from the event owners and local management, that they are ready to take a more thoughtful approach than ever before, and are willing to put in the work to translate values into action and measurable performance improvements. We hope the participants will be equally pleased and proud to run an event with that type of commitment.”

In cooperation with the host, the Catalina Island Conservancy, the Catalina Island Marathon is a cup-less course. For hydration, participants can purchase a reusable soft-cup. Participants may also provide their own hydration system.

The oldest and most prestigious trail marathon in California, The Catalina Island Marathon was an early cup-less race supporter, and, like all Spectrum events, works to eliminate single use plastic at the finish line.

“Since the Catalina Island Marathon is a leader in a push for sustainability in racing, it only makes sense for us to align with the Council for Responsible Sport as we share a common goal,” said Spectrum Sports Management President and CEO Mike Bone“Our partnership with the Catalina Island Conservancy has provided the encouragement and resources to pursue this certification, and, as the owners and stewards of the Run Catalina brand, it is also our intent to have each of the three runs obtain this same certification, including the Avalon Benefit 50 Mile/50K Run as well as the Catalina Island Half Marathon and 10K.”
