Triathlete Specials for Nov 5 Weekend
Catalina Island Offers Specials to Triathletes on Novermber 5th Weekend
The 27th Annual Catalina Island Triathlon will be held on Saturday, November 5th, 2011 in Avalon. The Island triathlon event will be the only fall triathlon on Catalina Island. On September 6th, the Avalon City Council decided that two identical athletic events, targeting the same audience and held on two consecutive weekends, was not in the best interest of the citizens of Avalon. Accordingly, the City Council revoked an event permit for an October 29th triathlon. To celebrate the Catalina Island Triathlon on November 5th, the Catalina Island Chamber of Commerce and its members are providing triathletes a variety of Island specials during the weekend of the event.
The Catalina Island Chamber of Commerce, owner of the Catalina Island Triathlon event since 1993, is offering enticing specials for race participants for the triathlon weekend of November 4-6th. Participants and their loved ones can come over to Catalina for an enjoyable fun-filled weekend – and save money! The special triathlon offers include discounts on a selection of lodging properties, retail merchandise, activities such as golf, parasailing, golf cart rentals and eco jeep tours to the interior, helicopter transportation and sweets and treats while on the island. Go to www.catalinachamber.com/triathlon to see all the specials offered for the weekend.
The popular end-of-the-season sprint triathlon is one of the longest running multi-sports in the United States and is considered one of the most picturesque venues for a triathlon. The scenic Catalina Island Triathlon course consists of a ½ mile swim in the calm ocean waters of Avalon Bay, a 15 kilometer bike ride through Avalon Canyon and a 3.1 mile (5 km) run through the streets of Avalon. Catalina Island’s Mediterranean climate allows for November air and water temperatures in the mid to high 60's.
The triathlon begins at 9am, Saturday November 5th at Middle Beach in Avalon on Catalina Island. There is a mandatory pre-race meeting either on Friday evening or at 8am on the day of the race. Registration for event participants is $100 per individual. Relay teams can register for $200 per team. Registration is open at www.catalinaislandtriathlon.com.
Catalina Island Chamber of Commerce’s CEO, Wayne Griffin states, “We are looking forward to the triathletes coming over to the Island and competing in what Triathete Magazine has named as one of the “Top Ten Most Scenic Races.”” Funds gleaned from the long-time Chamber of Commerce event will largely be reinvested in Catalina Island, and will continue to improve the venue for triathletes and others who come to enjoy all the Island has to offer.
Catalina Island is located just 22 miles off the coast of Southern California and is easily accessible by boat or helicopter. For more information on the Catalina Island Triathlon or to register, go to www.CatalinaIslandTriathlon.com or call Spectrum Sports at 909-399-3553.
