Cruise Round the Island

Round the Island Cruise Benefits Catalina Island Museum

AVALON, CA  Catalina Island legend Doug Bombard is hosting a Round the Island Cruise as a benefit for the Catalina Island Museum on Thursday, October 8 from 10:30 to 4 p.m., departing from Avalon at the Cabrillo Mole.  Only 130 seats are available for this once in a lifetime chance to enjoy a narrated tour around the entire island.

Bombard cut his teeth as a young man on the island running the Miss Catalina Speedboats, a company his father, Al Bombard had started.  He famously piloted a “runaway” speedboat as a stunt for the MGM Doris Day movie “The Glassbottom Boat” in the mid-1960s.  Bombard went on to run both the Santa Catalina Island Company hunting program as well as the operation out at Two Harbors for many years.  In the 1980s he and his son Greg went on to found Catalina Express, now the major form of transport to and from the island.

Throughout the years Bombard has evidenced a true passion for Catalina and her history which he is eager to share on his upcoming Round the Island Cruise.  He has invited others to share their stories and William Wrigley Jr.’s granddaughter Ada Blanche Wrigley Schreiner will be a featured guest.  Guests will also have a chance to get a short tour of the Wrigley Marine Science Center at Big Fisherman’s Cove as well as have lunch before heading off around Land’s End to explore the rugged “backside” of the island.

Seats are limited, so don’t delay!  Tickets are $150 for one and $125 each additional ticket and include lunch.  Tickets may be ordered online at www.CatalinaMuseum.org.  All trip proceeds will support the Museum’s efforts to collecting, preserving and sharing Catalina’s unique cultural heritage.

The Chicago Cubs trained on Catalina Island from 1921 to 1951.
