Taste Around of Avalon kicks off the Festival

AVALON, CATALINA ISLAND -  In celebration of the annual return of Catalina Island’s famous flying fish, Catalina announces the 3rd Annual Flying Fish Festival, June 3rd – 6th, a four day festival of family fun on California’s only island resort destination.   

From late May to September every year, Catalina Island welcomes the famed flying fish. This spectacular fish soars out of the water at heights of up to 30 feet and glides for distances as long as ¼ mile. The flying fish visit the Island for only a few months a year and best show off at night when lured with lights. It is only fitting that Catalina celebrates their arrival by honoring them as special guests with a four day long weekend of festivities.

The Flying Fish Festival kicks off on June 3rd, a Thursday night, with the Taste Around of Avalon. It’s a chance to explore some of Avalon’s finest eateries and taste their most delectable menu items – all in one night!  Tasters will stroll down Avalon's waterfront and visit each participating establishment to sample their best "Tastes" of food and/or drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) and/or desserts.  Guests will vote for their favorite food, drink and dessert on the Taste Around of Avalon Voting Card. The establishments with the most votes at the end of the evening will be awarded $100 and a certificate of recognition.

Activities are plentiful throughout the rest of the weekend as the events and entertainment roll out to celebrate the fantastic flying fish.  Festival events include evening Flying Fish Boat Tours aboard the Blanche W, a Flying Fish street fair, a professional sand sculpture creation, a wooden boat building challenge, free musical and theatrical entertainment, family kayak and segway races, live marine touch tanks, garden tours, beach bingo, various ocean craft activities for kids, a Flying Fish Parade, Gil, the Flying Fish and Much More!  For the complete schedule of events go to  www.CatalinaChamber.com/flyingfish.
