“Dive Deep Around Catalina” Auction Begins at 12 AM August 19

Calling all “citizen scientists” who would like a chance to dive deep – more than 900 feet deep – off the coast of Catalina Island!

As part of the Undersea Voyager Project that will be conducted in October, the Catalina Island Chamber of Commerce and the Catalina Island Conservancy will auction off a two-day mission for one person to go where virtually no one has gone before. The online auction begins at 12 AM PDT Thursday, August 19, and will close at 11:59 PM on Monday, August 23.

The winning bid will receive a two-day Submarine Mission for one person. If needed, the successful bidder will also receive round-trip transportation from the Long Beach area to Avalon or Two Harbors via the Catalina Express ferry. Meals and accommodation will be provided. Accommodation location will be based on the location of the dive site.

The mission includes:

• Ground School: 1/2-day systems / safety training
• Research Mission: 1-day sub dive operations (3-4 hours / dive)
• Analysis / De-Brief: 1/2-day with researchers

The two-day mission has been generously donated by Oceangate LLC, (www.opentheoceans.com) benefactor of the non-profit Undersea Voyager Project. Proceeds will support the ongoing economic development and tourism efforts of the Catalina Island Chamber and the Conservancy's protection and restoration of Catalina's wildlands.
