Catalina Island Triathlon Nov 5

27th Annual Catalina Island Triathlon November 5, 2011
Registration now open at www.CatalinaIslandTriathlon.com

The 27th Annual Catalina Island Triathlon will be held on the first Saturday in November in Avalon. The date of this year’s race is Saturday, November 5, 2011. The event is one of the longest running multi-sports in the United States and is considered one of the most picturesque venues for a triathlon.

Triathletes can experience the beauty of Catalina Island and Avalon at this end-of-the- season triathlon. "We love having the triathletes in town and we look forward to having them in Avalon each year, says Brad Wilson, Senior Vice President for the Santa Catalina IslandCompany. “They’re an energetic and happy crowd and seem to really enjoy our community.  We appreciate them coming to the island.”

The triathlon begins at 9am, Saturday November 5th at Middle Beach in Avalon. There is a mandatory pre-race meeting either on Friday evening or at 8am on the day of the race. Participants can come over to Catalina for the day or make an enjoyable weekend out of it.

Registration for event participants is $100 per individual. Relay teams can register for $200 per team. Funds gleaned from the long-time Chamber of Commerce event will largely be reinvested in Catalina Island, and will continue to improve the venue for triathletes and others who come to enjoy all the Island has to offer.

Since 1993 the Catalina Island Chamber of Commerce Chamber has owned the Catalina Island Triathlon event and has produced it with the assistance of various sports management companies. For the first time the event will be organized by Spectrum Sports Management, Inc.

Mike Bone, owner of Spectrum Sports, is ecstatic to add the Catalina Island Triathlon to Spectrum Sports’ connection to Catalina Island. “We have been overseeing two other race events on the island - the Avalon Benefit 50 Mile Run for nine years and the Catalina Island Eco Marathon for five years. Our goal as a company is to help make Catalina Island the ultimate triathlon and running destination,” Bone concluded.

Catalina Island Chamber of Commerce’s CEO, Wayne Griffin states, “We have first-hand experience with Spectrum Sports, which has a history of managing top-quality events on Catalina Island. Spectrum Sports Management will do a great job of organizing this annual event for us.”

Catalina Island is located just 22 miles off the coast of Southern California and is easily accessible by boat or helicopter. Catalina Island’s Mediterranean climate allows for November air and water temperatures in the mid to high 60's. The scenic Catalina Island Triathlon course consists of a ½ mile swim in the calm ocean waters of Avalon Bay, a 15 kilometer bike ride through Avalon Canyon and a 3.1 mile (5 km) run through the streets of Avalon. For more information or to register, go to www.CatalinaIslandTriathlon.com or call Spectrum Sports at 909-399-3553.

Catalina tile, now a collectors item, was originally produced from mud on the island from 1927 - 1937.
