Hikes out of Avalon:

Renton Mine Road Trail: 1.9 miles one way. Moderate. This trail is the official start of the Trans-Catalina Trail, transversing the entire length of the island, 37.2 miles from end to end.  The trail starts from the paved Wrigley Road, about a ½ mile past the Inn at Mt. Ada. The shaded trail winds uphill to the historic Renton Mine area. Silver, nickel and lead were mined on the Island; however, the mine shaft is now closed. About ¾ of the way up the trail you'll find the intersection of the East End Road Trail.

Hermit Gulch Trail: 2.4 miles one way. Moderately Strenuous. This trail begins in Avalon at the Hermit Gulch Campground, located up Avalon Canyon, past the golf course. The trail is a steady climb to 1500 feet. At the terminus of this trail you can pick up the Trans-Catalina Trail to make for a longer hike. This trail can be combined with the Lone Tree Trail spur, or the Divide Road to Wrigley Memorial Road Trail to form a popular loop hike. Or take the Divide Road trail to take you on a longer one way hike to either the Summit or East Mountain.

Lone Tree Trail: .5 miles, one way. Moderately Strenuous. This trail is a spur of the Hermit Gulch Trail. It leads to a spectacular view point of the Islands Palisades region and beyond to San Clemente Island and the Pacific Ocean.

Wrigley Memorial and Botanical Garden Trail: Moderate. 1.2 miles one way. From the Wrigley Memorial the trail climbs to an elevation of 1000 feet. The red berried Toyon trees are abundant along the way. From this trail you can take the Divide Road and join the Hermit Gulch Trail to form a loop, or the East End Road Trail to continue on to East Mountain and the Renton Mine Road Trail.

East End Road Trail: 4.2 miles one way. Moderate. This trails starts at the terminus of the Wrigley Memorial and Botanical Garden Trail and continues to the Renton Mine Road Trail. After turning left from the Wrigley Trail there are a few long gradual climbs. Toyon trees are thick in this area. Continuing on 2.6 miles to East Mountain (elevation of 1563 feet) affords a great view of the Los Angeles Basin, the South Coast and San Clemente Island. At the terminus of this trail you can join the Renton Mine Road Trail which takes you back to the road system.
