The Airport in the Sky is located about 11 miles from Avalon and is near the center of the island. It's 32 nautical miles from Los Angeles International Airport and is is primarily used for general aviation. The airport is also used for air freight to deliver supplies for the island via a daily DC3 aircraft.
It is known as the Airport in the Sky due to the fact it lies near the island's highest point at an elevation of 1602 feet. Terrain falls off steeply at both ends of the runway. It's 3250 foot runway serves most small planes and the airport is frequently used as one of the destinations during pilot training for SoCal based flight schools. In October 2009 the Airport in the Sky celebrates it's 50th anniversary of island aviation.
However the Airport in the Sky is more than just for planes. Enjoy a buffalo burger at the popular DC3 Gift Shop and Grill, enjoy the scenic vistas, take in the cultural and natural history of the Island at the Nature Center or view the spectacular tile map of the island. Take a hike down to the soapstone quarry, join the Trans-Catalina Trail or take a guided bike tour from the airport.
When you want to get to Catalina fast - in 14 minutes - try the helicopter from Long Beach or San Pedro. Tours are offered also.
One of the first things you'll see when approaching the Island is the sky speckled with colorful parasailers zipping through Avalon Harbor. For people who want to have beautiful coastal views and give their dare-devil side a thrill, try parasailing.
